Both
of my Canaan dogs were bred by Jill & Ian Terry,
with Tzel bred in partnership with Myrna Shiboleth.
Jill and Ian have owned Canaan Dogs since 1996 and live
in a rural area on the border of Cambridgeshire and
Norfolk.
I
always refer to the Babrees dogs as "free range"
having access to large paddocks throughout the day where
they can run, play and dig to their hearts content getting
plenty of exercise, sunshine and fresh air. They also
have a structured exercise regime of daily walks and,
for the more energetic, trotting alongside a bicycle
for a couple of miles, which they love! They also take
turns going out in the evening to training classes.

Puppies
are born and raised in the house where they become accustomed
to the noises and hustle and bustle of every day living,
they also have access to an outdoors play area where,
weather permitting, they spend their days playing, sunbathing
and just being puppies! They stay in the house with
their Mum until they all go to their new homes learning
essential Canaan skills such as digging! and of course
doggy manners. As Jill and Ian both work from home the
puppies and adults benefit from constant human company
and are very rarely left on their own for any length
of time. They take this aspect of Canaan ownership very
seriously and do not sell puppies to people who will
be out at work all day. The Babrees dogs are fed on
a diet of fresh raw meat and vegetables bought locally
and this is what the puppies are weaned onto.
The
Canaan Dog is a very healthy breed and Jill plays her
part in helping it remain so by hip scoring, eye testing
and patella testing all her breeding stock, puppies
are patella and vet checked before leaving for their
new homes. As far as we are aware Jill is the only UK
breeder who hip scores ALL her breeding stock before
breeding.
Puppies are registered with the Kennel Club, tattooed
with the National Tattoo Register and insured, they
leave with a contract, care sheet and diet instructions,
and enough fresh food for a couple of days (UK only).
Jill is always on hand to offer help and advice throughout
the dog's lifetime and produces a twice yearly newsletter
in full colour for everyone who has a puppy from them
containing articles, tips and updates on dogs they have
bred.

and Cane in the show ring

Although
not exhibited extensively, the Babrees Canaan Dogs have
still made their mark in the show ring both in the UK
and all around the world winning many Best of Breeds
and Best of Sex. At Crufts 2003 Jill and Ian were the
Breeder of the Best of Breed, Best Opposite Sex and
Reserve Best Bitch! They are also the breeder of the
first Canaan Dog to win the Pet Plan Junior Stakes Utility
& Terrier day, (Babrees Desert Orchid Via Caoilta).
The first UK bred AKC Champion. The first UK bred Swedish
Champion. The first UK bred French Champion and the
CO-breeder of the first UK bred Israeli Champion! The
success the Babrees Canaan Dogs have enjoyed at home
and abroad speaks for itself.
In
order to share Canaan Dog information with others, Jill
has set up a website called Canaan Dogs Around the World,
this site contains pedigrees and photos of Canaan Dogs
from all over the world as well as health articles and
breed information. She is also building a breed archive
of everything Canaan and is always on the lookout for
articles, health results and photos. This information
is freely available to all who are interested. Jill
and Ian also welcome visitors who wish to learn more
about the breed and meet some Canaan Dogs (even if they
are not having a "Babrees" puppy), they believe
that it is important for potential owners to meet adult
Canaan Dogs before committing themselves to purchasing
a puppy.
