THE
STORY SO FAR
Wild, feral and primitive
dogs have always fascinated me and in the of summer
1999 I decided to look for more information about
the Canaan Dog, I had seen a photo of a fantastic
looking black Canaan bitch in one of the dog papers
and made a note of the web site address meaning to
visit so I could learn more, in the mean time I was
conversing with a certain Jill Terry via a raw feeding
chat room and she mentioned that her bitch had just
had a litter of puppies, I visited the web site address
she sent me and was delighted to see that the bitch
that had caught my eye in the paper was Jill's Layla!
After a few initial phone calls Jill and I arranged
to meet at a dog show, I met up with Jill, Ian and
her dogs and that was it, I was hooked! A few weeks
later I came home with Tzel.
As I was only ever interested in purchasing one of
Layla's puppies, Jill Terry is the ONLY UK
breeder that has ever received an enquiry about a
Canaan puppy from me.
Tzel
had a great start in the show world with a Best Puppy
in Breed win at his very first show, the BUBA open
show on the 18th of March 2000. The 2001 BUBA show
was cancelled due to the foot and mouth outbreak but
Tzel came back for the 2002 show winning Best of Breed
and going on to win Best
in Show 3!
We have enjoyed great success in the show ring with
numerous 1st placings and Best Puppy awards as well
as Reserve Best Dog awards in Canaan classes and a
Best Dog and Reserve Best of Breed award in AVNSC
at only 10 months old.
He won his first Best of Breed in Canaan Classes at
Championship level at 22 months old, his second at
23 months and his third at 32 months!
Tzel hopes that he continues to make his breeders,
Jill (or Granny Jill as we know her), Ian Terry (Granddad)
and Myrna Shiboleth, very proud in the show ring the
coming years.
THE
GENUINE ARTICLE
Both
Tzel's sire and dam were bred by Myrna Shiboleth of
the Shaar Hagai Kennels in Israel. Myrna has been
breeding Canaan dogs for over 30 years and acquired
some of her original stock from the founder of the
breed, Prof R. Menzel, notably including Laish me
Bnei HaBitachon the first Israeli Canaan champion
and the dog Prof. Menzel considered to be the best
she ever bred. In the early days of the Shaar Hagai
Kennels Myrna brought all her dogs to Prof. Menzel
to be judged and evaluated. Prof. Menzel would explain
exactly what the qualities and the faults of that
particular dog, and how it related to her ideal vision
of the breed and whether or not it should be registered
and bred from.
Myrna has continued Prof. Menzel's work by helping
to preserve the breed and introducing wild stock to
the breeding programme whenever possible.
